Test 1: does it reconstruct, or does it blur?
The biggest quality difference, and the easiest to verify.
Blurring softens the watermark’s own pixels. The mark becomes unreadable and the region stays visibly damaged — the image still reads as watermarked. Inpainting generates new pixels matching the surroundings, so there’s nothing left to see.
Plenty of tools describing themselves as removers are blurring, because a blur is a trivial computation while a generative model is expensive to run.
The test: process an image where the watermark sits over strong texture — grass, foliage, brickwork, gravel, patterned fabric. Then zoom in.

Test 2: on-device or uploaded?
Rarely mentioned in comparisons, and it matters more than most feature differences.
Cloud tools upload your file to a server. That allows bigger models and spares your battery, and it means your photos and videos pass through third-party infrastructure under retention terms you probably haven’t read.
On-device tools keep the file on your phone or computer. They work offline, and there’s no server cost to fund with advertising.

Test 3: does it handle watermarks that move?
Static marks are easy. Many real ones aren’t. TikTok’s logo alternates corners specifically to defeat simple removal; various editing apps drift their mark across the frame; broadcast bugs animate.
