Short answer

Mark the watermark, let AI inpainting reconstruct the pixels underneath from the surrounding texture, and export. It works very well over grass, sky, skin, fabric and other consistent textures, and poorly over faces, readable text, or dense tiled watermarks that cover too much of the frame to reconstruct from.

The pixels under a watermark are gone. They were overwritten when the mark was applied, and nothing can look them up. So removing a watermark from a photo means reconstructing that area convincingly enough that nobody can tell.

Modern AI inpainting does this well — often perfectly. It also fails in specific, predictable ways that are worth knowing before you start.

How the reconstruction works

An inpainting model looks at everything surrounding the watermarked region and generates new pixels to fill it. Not a copy-paste of nearby pixels — that’s the old clone-stamp approach, and it produces visible repetition. The model has been trained on an enormous number of images and has learned what tends to continue where.

If a watermark sits on grass, it generates grass with the right blade direction, scale and shadow. If it crosses a horizon line, it continues the horizon at the correct angle. If it’s over a face in soft focus, it generates matching bokeh.

Two things follow from this, and the second is the one people miss:

  1. It works brilliantly on texture. Grass, sky, water, sand, fabric, foliage, walls, blurred backgrounds — anything statistically consistent. Results here are genuinely indistinguishable from an unmarked original.
  2. It invents. The output is plausible, not true. Over content that can’t be inferred from surroundings, the model still produces something — confidently, and wrongly.

Step by step

  1. Start with the highest-resolution copy. More surrounding pixels means more context. A screenshot of the image is meaningfully worse than the image.

  3. Select the watermark plus a small margin. Too tight and you leave a faint outline of the original mark; a few pixels of breathing room blends far better.
  4. Reconstruct.
  5. Zoom to 100% and check the edges. The boundary of the patched region is where flaws show first, and they’re invisible at fit-to-screen.
  6. Export at full resolution, maximum quality.

The three genuine failure modes:

Text. A mark across a sign, a document, a price or a number plate comes back as something text-shaped and unreadable. Letterforms aren’t texture, and the model has no way to know which letters they were.

Faces. Facial structure isn’t reliably inferable from neighbouring pixels. Removing a mark that crosses an eye or a mouth produces a result that’s technically seamless and quietly wrong — the uncanny effect people notice without being able to name.

Coverage. A corner logo covers maybe 3% of the frame, leaving abundant context. A diagonal tiled grid can cover 25% or more, leaving too little intact image to reconstruct from. Stock comps are built this way deliberately; it’s the whole design intent.

The reliable test: if you can’t confidently say what’s under the watermark by looking at the photo yourself, the model can’t either. It’ll produce something regardless — that’s what generative models do — but it’s inventing, not recovering.

Whose photo is it?

Removing a watermark from your own photo is entirely your call.

Removing one from a photo you don’t own is a different question, and the watermark is often the legal notice itself. In the US, 17 U.S.C. § 1202 covers the intentional removal of copyright management information where you know it will conceal infringement — a distinct claim from infringement, with its own penalties. The UK and EU have comparable provisions.

Two common cases worth naming.
