Two different things

The visible watermark is part of the picture — pixels composited into the frames, like any other logo. You can see it, and it can be reconstructed away with inpainting.

Provenance metadata is stored alongside the picture rather than in it. You can’t see it, and it isn’t affected by anything you do to the pixels.

The practical consequence is direct: removing the logo does not remove the provenance record. They’re independent, and reconstructing the corner of a frame leaves the metadata entirely intact.

What content credentials are

The main standard here is C2PA — the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity — which specifies a way of recording how a piece of media was made and attaching that record to the file.

A credential can record what tool generated or edited the content, when, and what happened to it subsequently. Crucially it’s cryptographically signed, so the record can be checked for tampering rather than simply trusted.

The point isn’t to prevent editing. It’s to make the history of a file checkable, so a viewer or a platform can ask where something came from and get a verifiable answer.

Adoption varies and moves quickly. Some generators embed credentials by default, some don’t, and support can differ between plans. Check the documentation for whichever tool produced your file.

Why this matters practically

A growing number of platforms read these credentials on upload and label content accordingly.

So a video with the visible watermark reconstructed away can still be identified as AI-generated and labelled as such. If the goal was for generated footage to pass as filmed, watermark removal doesn’t accomplish it — and this isn’t a gap that better removal technology closes, because it’s not a pixel problem.

The re-encoding wrinkle

Metadata can be removed, and re-encoding a video frequently drops it as a side effect — not through any intent, just because many encoding pipelines don’t carry unfamiliar metadata through.

That’s not the same as defeating the system, for a reason worth understanding: a missing credential is itself informative.

The design assumption is that verified provenance becomes the signal, rather than absent provenance being suspicious by default. Media with a signed record can be checked; media without one simply can’t be. As adoption grows, some platforms treat those two states differently — and “no verifiable history” is a weaker position than “verified as filmed on a camera”.

So stripping metadata doesn’t produce a file that looks camera-original. It produces a file with no history at all.

Why generators watermark

Two motivations, pulling in the same direction.

Branding. A logo on shared output advertises the tool, in the same way TikTok’s watermark advertises TikTok.

Identifiability. There’s real pressure — regulatory, platform-level and public — for synthetic media to be distinguishable from filmed media. Several jurisdictions have moved toward requiring disclosure of AI-generated content in various contexts.

The tension is genuine and worth acknowledging. A logo in the corner of a stylised creative clip is a nuisance with little public interest at stake. Generated footage depicting a real-looking event is a different case entirely, and the same mechanism serves both.

Where a piece of work sits on that spectrum is usually obvious to the person who made it.

What actually governs your use

Not the watermark — the generator’s terms.

They vary substantially:

Removing a logo changes none of this. If you’re using generated video commercially, the terms are the thing worth reading properly — and they’re a better guide to what’s permitted than the presence or absence of a mark.

Editing and provenance more broadly

This extends past AI generation. Content credentials can also record ordinary edits, including object removal and retouching.

For creative work that’s unremarkable — editing is what editing tools are for. In journalistic, evidential or documentary contexts, a verifiable record of what was changed has obvious value, and it’s the case the standard was largely designed around.
